Swirl
Jeff Shine and his family, the owners of Swirl, are among the folks who make Mill Valley what we all want it to be—a true community with terrific schools at its center.
A few years ago, Jeff was a stay-at-home-dad with two goals: to re-enter the work force while remaining available during the day for his two kids, and to live in a community with a great school system. He and his wife Kristine came across the idea of a self-serve yogurt business and felt it would be a perfect fit for their family and Mill Valley. Voila! Swirl!
Jeff, a life-long Marin resident, envisioned Swirl as not only a fantastic frozen yogurt shop, but also a community gathering place. On any given day, Swirl is filled with families creating their favorite yogurt concoctions and relaxing with friends and neighbors for what Jeff calls an “escape from the daily routine that is comfortable for kids and parents.” Customers are served by Tam High students, and can enjoy their tasty treats while chatting with friends, enjoying the Giants game, or spotting their classmates on “Swirl TV,” a popular big-screen slide show of happy Swirl customers. Jeff loves that so many of his customers know each other and his staff, and that he is part of the Mill Valley community. “It’s fun!” says Jeff of his home away from home.
Customers are drawn to Swirl for the lively atmosphere and community, but that wouldn’t be enough without great frozen yogurt! Swirl has been voted the best frozen yogurt shop in Marin two years running by Pacific Sun readers. With so many flavors and toppings to choose from, everyone can find a favorite combination. Jeff’s favorite combo is Dulce de Leche yogurt with peanut butter cups and caramel sauce. Jeff’s daughter, Annie, a 2nd grader at Tam Valley School, has come up with what might be the most bizarre combination—tart yogurt flavors swirled with chocolate and vanilla yogurt and topped with sour patch kids, skittles and marshmallow sauce. Try that one at your own risk!
Jeff not only builds community at Swirl, he also supports the community through generous donations to Kiddo! Even in Swirl’s infancy, Jeff continued the Mill Valley community tradition of sharing in the support of education, and his Kiddo! donations enable our schools to offer the arts and other programs essential for our children. Jeff and Kristine settled in Mill Valley to provide their kids with a great education and strong community. Through the Swirl community and their contributions to Kiddo!, the Shine family ensures that both Mill Valley traditions will endure.
